Additional Fun Facts About Halloween

  1. The world record for the most lit Jack-o-Lanterns, 30,581, is held by the City of Keene, New Hampshire. It was achieved October 19th 2013.
  2. Bobbing for apples is a fun Halloween activity which was originally done in Europe hundreds of years ago. It was done by young women as a courting ritual (an activity performed to find their soulmate). If a woman was able to bite an apple on the first try it meant that the “stars aligned” and she was destined to be with her crush. If she got it on the second try it meant she would have a brief relationship with her crush but it wouldn’t last. If it took three or more, the relationship wasn’t meant to be.
  3. The Day of the Dead, or Dia de Los Muertos, is a Mexican holiday that starts on October 31st and ends on November 2nd. So it should be called “Days of the Dead”. November 1st honors deceased children, and the 2nd honors the adults.
  4. The character from Halloween, Michael Myers, wears a mask that was transformed from a Star Trek Captain Kirk mask.
  5. The city Des Moines, Iowa has young children go trick or treating the night before Halloween. And this night is called Beggars’ Night. But in order to get a treat the children must tell corny jokes, such as:

"If April showers bring May flowers, what do May flowers bring?"

                "Pilgrims."
